MARNmentors is a self-motivated program that provided a resource to discuss professional and personal goals and receive feedback from an established artist (Jason Yi). The program concluded with a group exhibition at the Var Gallery in Milwaukee, WI .
As a MARNmentee, I immediately felt I had joined a community that I could reach out
to. I was welcomed with enthusiasm by MARN’s directors, and pushed to make art that
clearly communicated my ideas and thoughts while working with Jason; his feedback
taught me to look at my projects objectively.
What stood out most about this experience was Jason’s positivity and efficiency during
our meetings. I’d come to him stuck and unsure what to do next, and left with tasks I
could work towards. He also helped me develop professional skills by pointing out
important details that should be addressed, and breaking down the application process for
various opportunities I expressed interest in.
I started with a vague sense of what I wanted to do or say with my art, as well as what
medium to make with. I thought mastering a technique should be my priority, but Jason
encouraged me to continue experimenting across disciplines. I produced several small
projects that, at the time, felt scattered. However, through trial and error and a lot of
journaling, I was presently surprised I could finally see a theme throughout my work and
hear my voice coming through.
